Music Making Monday

I have a very musical family.  There are many guitars and keyboards and loads of percussion options in each of our homes.  I also have a family in love with Christmas traditions.  We used to joke that if we did something once, it became a tradition.  One tradition that has been evolving over the last 25 years is the family Christmas concert.  In the early days, the music (all written by my husband) was performed by my husband and daughters.  When our first son-in-law joined the family and brought his drums along, the band began to grow.  Soon I was taking drum lessons and got to play on a few songs.  This year we welcomed another son-in-law and guess what?  He plays guitar so of course he needed to join the band.  Even our tiny person has a shaker and loves to add some extra percussion to the mix.

Our annual concert was a few weeks ago and as always, it was very fun.  We get to see people we only see once a year and to give them the gift of music.  Sometimes I wonder if I take my music making family for granted.  I forget that this is not the norm.

Here is hoping that there is some music in your season that brings you joy – as a listener or a music maker.

  1. That’s just wonderful! I bet that is the highlight of the holidays! My immediate family is also musical . . . but now that the kids have moved far away and Tom has stopped singing in any choir, I miss the music very much! When my kids went away to college, what I missed most was the sound of practicing. . .

  2. Each year at Christmas our son comes home and plays the guitar. It was one of the best investments we ever made as a family. He has a guitar from MExico and he met the man who made it! it is a treasure. I think of his guitar teacher often. He was a gift to all of us

  3. Limited musical talent in our family, but Charlie did get a ukulele for his birthday – I wonder if he knows any Christmas songs 😉 I think your tradition of a family concert is wonderful (and whew! both girls married boys who played an instrument … although I’m guessing that’s probably an important enough attribute that there wasn’t ever any doubt?) – what sort of music do y’all play?

  4. Wish we could have been there to hear (and see!) everyone. Also, I love your, “if we do it once it’s a tradition” idea…we may have to adopt that thinking!!

  5. what fun! we are musical too but we never thought of that – at my sister’s gingerbread making party, my kids play Christmas piano music and we sing. It’d be fun if it was a band!
