August – chasing rest

August has flown by and it is only the last week that I have been paying attention to restful moments. I found myself drawn to my sewing space where I can lose myself in the work of stitching one seam and then another until I have finished something lovely and fun. Last weekend I stitched the binding on my low volume string quilt and I am finding rest in the hand stitching.

I have also returned to the Calm app to bring meditation into my early mornings. And those sleep stories really do help me get back to sleep when I wake up at a ridiculous hour.

  1. I’m not really a sewer (sewist?) — I can fix small holes in seams and sew on a button, but that’s about it — but I used to do a lot of counted cross stitch and found it very meditative, so I imagine hand-sewing on a large project must be very restful.

  2. Sometimes the best rest is found in making! And, I truly don’t know what my day would be like without morning meditation. It is the only way to start the day!

  3. Hand stitching really can be restful, when I quilted a lot one of my favorite parts was to sew the binding by hand. I’m glad you are finding rest in these last moments of August.

  4. I find just being in my sewing “studio” restful and I can – but don’t, often enough – spend the entire day there. Working on changing that dynamic a bit. I think I like th idea of framing studio time as “resting” rather than “must finish this…” Thx for your post; it has changed my perspective. And more resting for you, too!

  5. thinking of you stitching those seams by hand is restful (sadly, thinking of me doing same is … not so much 😉 I hope you and your family are having a RESTful weekend.

  6. There are many ways to rest. I hope your back to school days are going well. Thank you for the prompt to think about the word for the year. It keeps me thinking of mine.
