a lot to wrangle

October 1959

I discovered this photo after mom passed away but it instantly became the screen saver on my phone. I love so much about this. This glasses are just too wonderful. And her smile. Mom was quick to smile and offer a welcome. Here she sits, with child number four in just over five years (and still one more to join the brood) always looking calm. And there I am, with my own baby, trying to be a mommy.

This is one of the stories I never really chased. What was it like to have four little people in the house? Did she get one out of diapers before the next arrived? I know it was not uncommon. My cousins and many of my friends have stair step siblings. Shortly after this photo, we would move to Arizona and it was easy enough to open the back door and let us play outside. But that is still a lot to wrangle.

  1. What a great photo! Dale’s mother had 3 boys in 4 years and I always marvel when I see photos of her during that time because it always looked like she had everything under control.

  2. I never knew your folks lived in AZ! Somehow I never knew that they had 5 children either. I did however have glasses similar to your mom’s a very long time ago! Fun photo!

  3. I had to google ‘stair step children’! Thank-you for enlarging my vocabulary :). Such a great photo … you look so very sweet with your doll. And have a photo of my Mum somewhere with glasses that shape (except hers were darker in colour). The older I get, the more I wish I’d asked my Mum for more information about her life when we were small.

  4. What a wonderful photo! And you look so cute – your smile is adorable. I had 3 in diapers for a short period of time (my oldest was slow to potty train), which still shocks me to think about. Your mother DOES look calm to have had 4 kids in 5 years – I’m amazed.

  5. oh I love the comments! my mom had similar glasses … I need to find a photo! … but we were three children in just over four years. and like others, I thought my TWO in nearly FIVE years was plenty!
